Finishing sooner than you would like is one of the most common sexual concerns, and one of the most solvable. This guide collects everything we have written on lasting longer, from quick techniques to long-term training.

Why men finish sooner than they want

Premature ejaculation is the most common male sexual concern. Surveys suggest that around 20 to 30% of men worry about finishing too soon at some point, although true lifelong premature ejaculation, defined by the International Society for Sexual Medicine as ejaculation within about one minute of penetration most of the time, is much rarer. For most men, the issue is a mix of high arousal, anxiety, habits learned during quick solo sessions and not knowing how to manage arousal.

The encouraging part: control is a skill, and it can be learned.

What actually helps, in order of evidence

  1. Behavioural techniques: the stop-start and squeeze methods, developed decades ago and still recommended by urologists and sex therapists, teach you to recognise and manage the build-up to ejaculation.
  2. Pelvic floor training: several studies have found that regular pelvic floor exercises improve ejaculatory control in many men within about 12 weeks.
  3. Arousal awareness: rating arousal from 1 to 10 and slowing down at 7 or 8 is the core of edging.
  4. Breathing and relaxation: slow belly breathing and relaxing the thighs and buttocks reduce the push towards climax.
  5. Positions and pace: slower positions with less friction, such as woman on top or side-lying, make control easier.
  6. Medical options: a GP can discuss treatments such as anaesthetic sprays or medication if the problem is persistent or distressing.

A simple 4-week plan

  • Week 1: pelvic floor exercises daily; notice your arousal levels during solo play.
  • Week 2: practise stop-start during solo sessions, three or four pauses each time.
  • Week 3: add slow breathing and relaxation near the peak.
  • Week 4: bring the techniques into partnered sex, with a signal to pause agreed in advance.

Remember that great sex is not only about duration. Foreplay, oral sex and hands mean your partner's pleasure never depends on how long penetration lasts. The articles below go deeper into each step.

Techniques that build control

The bigger picture

Stress, communication and expectations matter as much as technique. If premature ejaculation happens most of the time or causes distress, a GP or sex therapist can help: effective treatments exist.

Frequently asked questions

What is considered premature ejaculation?
Medically, lifelong premature ejaculation means ejaculating within about one minute of penetration most of the time, with distress. Many more men simply want more control, which training can improve.

Can you train yourself to last longer?
Yes. Stop-start, the squeeze technique, edging, pelvic floor training and breathing all help most men improve control within a few weeks.

When should I see a doctor?
If you nearly always finish within a minute or two, if it started suddenly, or if it causes distress, a GP can check for causes and discuss treatments.
